My husband loves to listen to the games more than watch on tv. The radio is a tie to his childhood listening pleasure. My whole family is baseball crazy! I loved the poem, Carl.
The street was our park. We used a sewer cover in the center of the road for home base and sewer drains at the curbs for first and third base; second was a chalk line circle. Of course there were few cars parked on the street because not many people owned cars. The same went for traffic.
Yeah, in the street. We used door mats for bases. Had to use rubber ball because of parked cars but a real baseball if the school field was empty. I always batted 4th. I was a very slow runner so just hit the ball over the fence and that solved that.
Oh, how we adored Mickey Mantle.. There was one baseball game a week on TV back then. On Saturday. The Yankees(they beat Red Socks last night). We’d all be outside playing and the oldest kid, Robert, would watch the game and when The Mick was ready to bat he’d yell out the door “Mantle’s up ! Mantle’s up !” We dropped everything and ran inside to see him hit a homer. All of the statistics are wrong. Mickey Mantle hit a homer every time he batted. I was there. Mickey Mantle hit over 10 million home runs !
I can’t run any more but still have a power swing. I can still hit to and sometimes clear that right field fence. I still have my glove from the 1960’s.

As long as grampa is swinging, you know he’s around and appreciated.

I grew up a Brit so cricket was our game, but I get the nostalgia. Enjoying your poetry these days.

I have so many memories of playing baseball with my grandpa. We didn’t stop playing as he got older. It just got that much easier to strike him out.

Aw, now you had to let him hit a few now and then. I need to change to a basketball to hit.

Those Young Boys Are Playing Bocce Ball Not Baseball.
You Can Easily See The Bocce Balls They Are Holding And The Small Pallino Ball Near The Curb
