I hated playing baseball in PE, as I was always confused by the rules, so I was always happy when I missed the ball. Until the teacher started making us try over and over until we hit it, no matter how many times we missed.
Once you connect regularly the moment of the hit is beyond a describable thrill. For that fleeting second we are right there in a major league field. I had a lot of power and could put a ball over the right field fence 7 of 10 times !
Ah, you have resurrected a deep resentment from childhood: I never got a cool prize always something so stupid I threw it away immediately. This was compounded in that I hated the taste of those things in the first place.
In baseball the player is out or retired from batting after 3 strikes (misses and the first two balls hit out of bounds are also counted as misses). “three strikes and you’re out” has become a standard idiom for saying you have used up all your chances in American English.
“to choke” in sports talk means to fold under pressure in a once in a life time opportunity or just a failure when you could not muster the ability in that critical moment. Now the idiom applies to all walks of life not just sports.
Just so you get the full picture….I’m sitting out on my patio having my morning coffee….all is quiet in the neighborhood…..then I read your post and burst out laughing…my laugh is not a quiet chuckle!!! Neighbors always kid me about my laughter ringing through the backyards😀😀😀

Boy, if a second chance league isn’t enough perhaps there’s a third chance league for this sad sack?

Everyone should get to play but only if the crummy players are on the other team.

And I suppose the fans in the stands get TWO prizes in their Cracker Jack box?

Well strike seven seems like a good deal. Of course that would be more timely a few decades from now.
