how about Wars of the Roses, The Princes in the Tower, Elizabeth of York, The Children of Henry VIII, The Lady in the Tower, Henry VIII: The King and His Court, Mary Queen of Scots and the Murder of Lord Darnley all by Alison Weir
Good job, Carl! I’ll be returning to college in the fall (this month) to pursue an AA in English; something I didn’t do after h.s. You’re never too old, right? So I’ll be doing a lot of reading other than blogs . 🙂
Oh that’s wonderful. You will especially enjoy being around the young students(you’ll see how ignorant and vapid they are of this generation). I got my BA in 1971, my MA in 1980 and a second MA in 2006.So no, it’s never too late ! I was almost an English major but had to switch to history because the professors thought everything I wrote was stupid and got all F’s and D’s.
Oh, wow, you are accomplished and I’m envious! However, I no longer regret doing this back then because I love my family and life now. And now I have my older kids and of course, hubby to assist if I need it. Well, writing poetry is not writing essays so wish me luck! 🙂
Very ambitious, Carl. I read 3 books by Janet Evanovich, and Amanda Ripley’s “The Smartest Kids in the World.” That’s an unusual number for me. Next: Harper Lee’s “Go Set the Watchman.”
“A significant aspect of this novel is that it asks us to see Atticus now not merely as a hero, a god, but as a flesh-and-blood man with shortcomings and moral failing, enabling us to see ourselves for all our complexities and contradictions.” (Washington Post)
I hear there was great controversy “Go Set the Watchman” as Atticus is portrayed a great deal less noble. I think Gregory Peck did a job in the movie that no one could surpass.
I adored Gregory Peck as Atticus in the movie. I loved his role, too. We have too few heroes. More are needed. Not less.
From the reviews, I’m not sure I’m ready for the change in his character. Some believe “Go Set a Watchman” was her first draft. I do recall reading once that her publisher (or agent) asked her to change the story and write it from Scout’s point of view.
I’m trying my very best to accomplish as much. But I have to admit when it comes to reading it is most of the time behind the job, behind my mother, behind the writing… It sucks, but most of the time I read new books when I’m on vacation. 😦
Yes , he and Angus Donald are almost indistinguishable in writing style except Cornwell uses at least 30 pages to describe the hacking and blood squirting and particulars of strategy for each battle with graphic aplomb. Fill the book with a couple of battles and much space is taken by those scenes. Donald does the same in 3 or 4 pages and then moves on with the story line which elevates him a bit as a story teller in my mind.

I wonder how Spencer Tracy would have played Atticus.

I wish I could. I’m working on reading as much and often as I can. Once in a while I just take a day off to read as much as I can. *sigh*

I’m currently reading the entire Mary Poppins collection. It’s been quite fun. Before that was Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Hobbit.

I can’t stand TV anymore. It’s 5 minutes show and 3 minutes ads over and over again every hour.
