Between the US and Europe, the difference in the idea of “religion” is so big that I do not know anybody who could even guess what this joke was about.
I noticed that some years ago seeing people who had had a lot of schooling arguing about, well, let’s say, whether the Earth has 4 corners or not.

Yes, I think Europe is more secular than US even though we champion separation of church and state.
