Excellent story Carl. So many of the present generation are unaware of how far our nation has come as far as racial and ethnic reconciliation. Today the only group it is PC to trash is those evil fundamental Christians

Yes Christians and white males. I never enslaved anyone or was every in a position of “good ol’ white boys”. I would not own a slave. I am so particular if I want a job done I do it myself to make sure is is done correctly and to specs. 33 years in black high schools and they still call me cracker.

I enjoyed reading this tale. FYI, I went to school with the author of the children’s book you have here. Leslea Newman. We were good friends for much of high school.

Touched by the personal story. Sometimes, in our selfishness, we forget the struggle people before us have been through…and in many places in the world are still going through.

A beautiful, touching story, Carl. I am Catholic, but I know my husband, who is Jewish, would be deeply moved by your story.
During WW II, only one place in the U.S. – Oswego, NY – (near where I used to live) provided a safe haven for about a 1,000 people who were fleeing concentration camps. I got to talk to some people who lived at the Fort – which is where they were housed – and a former Mayor who was a boy at the time the refugees lived there. It haunts me that not more was done, and that more people could have been saved.
Your experience in elementary school is a wonderful example of how we can all welcome one another, and treat others as we’d like to be treated.

A nice story to share. I was thinking at first the crying might be in a mean way (maybe accidental), but it turned out not to be.
AA good thing to remember at xmas.

Powerful story, Carl. Many of my friends from high school were Jewish and I even went to one religious service of theirs. It was fascinating and really made my own Catholicism come alive, knowing we had our roots in Judaism. How sad that these creative, talented people were made to feel less-than-human.

Beautiful story. Where I grew up, there weren’t any Jewish people — or blacks, Latinos, etc. Polish people were considered outsiders and they looked just like the rest of us German-Austrian folks. Fortunately, times have changed and the area is very ethnically mixed now. I met my first black person at my first job. I was absolutely fascinated with her hair. It took all my might not to touch it.

What a powerful and heartwarming story, Carl. I visited a Jewish museum in Miami last year and learned about the anti-semiticsm there during that period of time. The museum is an old synagogue that was converted into a museum that was established to preserved the history of Jews in Miami. Fascinating stuff.
