These are copies off the net but I used to have a museum quality collection, over 300 pieces 1896-2000. None of the particularly rare but decent representation for all candidates. Was probably worth $12,000. I donated it to the Masonic Home for the aged in Florida.
“Light Bulb” Johnson? You’d think that would be meant to imply that he had lots of good ideas? These buttons are really something, Carl. Thanks for sharing and educating – had never seen the likes of these before.
I think the “Daisy Girl Mushroom Cloud” ad was broadcast only once but echoed dramatically. There is an anti Goldwater button depicting this. The irony is that at peak there were 500,000 US troops in Vietnam and LBJ got 36,000 soldiers killed in his presidency so who was the real war monger?
Exactly, but I feel LBJ did not seek re-election because of Viet Nam.
The cartoon I’m thinking of was a drawing of Goldwater throwing mud on JFK’s grave. Very distasteful.
When people talk about dirty politics, they apparently didn’t live thru this election when LBJ said if Goldwater was elected, he’d start a nuclear war. I also recall an editorial cartoon from that race that has stayed with me all these years.

The jokes are often the candidates nowadays not the buttons.

Civil Rights Act and Medicare milestones but Vietnam results of stubborn old man who did not want to be the first American president to lose a war.

I never saw that one. Chances are that RFK would have won the democratic nomination from sitting president LBJ in 1968 over Vietnam.

I worked for him in small store front headquarters in North Miami at least 20 hours a week for 8 months. I was 15.
