I got a reply from another blogger doctor:
The blogger must have undergone cardiac bypass graft surgery (CABG). There are certain post-operative complications like DVT (deep vein thrombosis) which can cause the swelling.But you have said that it’s been like this for six years! Ofcourse it’s not normal.He needs to get evaluated further. It may be due to impairment of veins,incompetence of valves (varicose veins)….filariasis ( though i feel there are less chances of this) etc. It can be concluded only after a clinical examination of the patient where we will have o see the degree of swelling,temperature,tenderness etc. A doppler study has to be done. We will have to know if the swelling is painful or not, if there are any other associated symptoms,any diurnal variation, any relation to walking too much. I suggest that the patient should definitely not ignore this and get himself re-evaluated either with his cardiologist or see a good surgeon. I hope this is helpful.
