Thanks for sharing this, Carl. So many moms have lost sons…and daughters in service to our country. Not much point in sending someone who doesn’t want to go. Many of these brave young men and women chose to go fight for what they believe in. We need to believe in them.
Great post, Carl. Tragic waste, indeed. I think that the only way to change foreign policy is to legislate politicians’ sons and daughters to the front lines. Maybe then we’d see change.
I don’t mean to be critical but on the monument it reads “mother’s who’s”… shouldn’t it be “mothers whose” [without and apostrophes]? Is this a deliberate error made as commentary on the silliness of this loss of life?
We are so encapsulated with ourselves few people realize that on the other side of the world , a dozen women a week get to become members of Gold Star Mothers.
Years ago, when my son wanted to join the army, I “jokingly” threatened to cut off his thumbs, so he would be found unfit … I lost one child … losing another one would push me over the edge for sure …

Thank you Carl. There’s an excellent poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning , “Mother and Poet” about the Potugese war.

This is so sad. I feel just awful for every mom who has lost a child to war.
I hope you had a nice Mother’s Day with your mom.

Such a beautiful Poem!!! Living in a war country, and knowing so many mothers who lost their sons/husbands/fathers, I know how hard it is

Can’t always be just funny. Gotta do meaningful once in a while. Also get to sneak out a little political commentary as well.

I’m not sure anything could ever compensate me for the loss of a son.

Perhaps mothers should be in charge of running the planet.

Perhaps you are right. I do know President Theodore Roosevelt lost a son in WW 1 and never really got over it.

I cry myself about it. 6,000 dead in Iraq and Afghanistan for what ? To make people rich on oil and opium.
