Ditto… the Canadian veterans sometimes have trouble getting what is their due from the government and the private charities do whatever they can to take up the slack.
This is an organization I’ve supported in the past. Also support organizations that help the homeless: Rescue Mission, Salvation Army and Daily Bread (in the Melbourne area).
When I was a teen, my Dad called the Salvation Army to help a homeless man. The man had been fired – in the middle of a harsh winter – from a neighboring farm and had no where to go. He stayed overnight in our detached garage and Mom gave him a home-cooked meal. He was glad he’d have a place to go to – the SA – and they’d provide work for him.
In the UK we have Help for Heroes, some of whom I know by name. Same war, same vets, all of whom need help and gratitude regardless of the flag they fight under. As you say Carl, we need to pay attention. Well done and (un)happy to help.
What saddens me is that Miami Dade County (1.5 million)is more than half foreign born and patriotic holidays or commemoration ceremonies get little attention and consequently fewer such ceremony is organized.
I’m quite familiar with this organization and have donated to them for years, mostly household items, books, etc for their shop. It’s a worthwhile cause. Thank you for doing this.

I think the citizens are very supportive but the government sometimes drops the ball.

Salvation Army has the highest ratio of money collected and money delivered to needy with lowest administrative costs.
