I was in DC in 1995 but did not get to see it. I guess I’ll just have to get elected President to do that. I would be better than any of these guys, you can bet on that !

Oh I am sure you are right but the irony is that Nixon was not spied upon. He taped himself. I shook hands with him in 1965, 1968 and 1972.

That snowman between the Nixons looks panicky. Is he being held hostage?
Tricky looks like he’s about to kidney punch him.

By the way – in case I forget later – Happy Christmas to you and yours and a mellow new year.

When on Rep committee it was full of Cubans whose only goal was to see who could scream loudest about Castro and did not give a hoot about USA. They did not help me when I ran. The only one who did was Mike Thompson who ran for congress for us a few times in 70’s. So got on Dade Dem committee from 82-85 and that was the same except racial, ethnic, and one issue groups dominated there for each particular agenda and I felt they were not putting the USA problems and solutions as a priority either. . For 2012 I like Mike Huckabee but cannot vote for someone that believes in 7 day Biblical creation. I like Romney but cannot vote for a Mormon because of their utter ridiculous rendition of the history of North America and the plates thing is absolute smoke and mirrors. Sarah Palin does not have the knowledge of history and geography that the average eighth grader has. I would vote Obama over any of these. So I may write in Ralph Nader as I voted for him in2000 (like 96,000 other Floridians). Don’t like super mega rich capitalists like Bloomberg because its like Cassius the richest man in Rome trying to become emperor but was eliminated. Bloomberg cannot get any electoral votes although he may do well like Perot who cost Bush#1 reelection. The south and midwest will go republican and the east Atlantic and Pacific coast will go democrat not Bloomberg. Americans don’t like or trust rich people anymore. Low electoral west is toss-up.

At one time, I also was a member of the Broward County Republican Party. There was constant fighting over abortion versus a woman’s right to choose. There was not a single worthwile idea about the U.S. economy. So as I look FORWARD, I know Bloomberg is the man to repair the US economy. However, we have to face terrorism. Senator Jim Webb is the man for President who can most effictively fight the terrorist threat. I have grown up and left the Republican Party NEVER to return. I will vote for and campaign for the most qualified INDEPENDENT Presidential candidate. R. Van Conoley PS- You were one of the greatest of the social studies teachers that has ever taught in the Dade County School System. Come on Carl, tell your readers who you like for President in 2012.

I want to vote for Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He had what today’s politicians would consider and very strange and radical ideas about democracy:

“We are determined to make every American the subject of his country’s interest.” 1937

“”…there must be a strict supervision of all banking and credits and investments; there must be an end to speculation with other people’s money. ” 1933

Theodore Roosevelt would put all the banksters in jail. Even better, Andrew Jackson would hang them.

I really do not wish to influence your decision, but I have two Presidental candidates that I am comfortable with on my website. I can only support an independent Presidential candidate in 2012. I would like to shake hands with President elect Mike Bloomberg or President elect James Webb. Look to the future Carl. R. Van Conoley

I shook hands with Nixon in 1965 at a small luncheon at the Deauville on Miami Beach. Again in the rope line at Tampa airport in 1968 and again at the rope line at Miami airport in 1972. Shook hands with Jimmy Carter at the civics center here in North Miami in 1976. And best of all, in 1980 I sat 10 feet away from Ron and Nancy at the Lincoln Day Dinner(about 2,000 attended) on Miami Beach at the $100,000 donation table! I paid $25 for my ticket, but I was tight with the president, vice president and treasurer of the Executive Committee of the Republican Party of Dade County (of which I was an elected committeeman from 1977-1982) and they fixed me up. He had us up and cheering at every sentence. He had us up and cheering for America!

I think some of them up there now, unfortunately, need to be reminded of that. They have no idea what it means not to have a job, unable to get groceries, and have no med care. “We are making progress….” By the middle of next year….” You are right on the other hand. I was quite surprised to see stodgy old Nixon with a smile and with Pat admiring of all things , a snowman!

The Carter’s tree is awfully thin. Sign of the times, perhaps?
LBJ had a relatively small tree. Understated was probably best at that time, I suppose.
Very interesting pictures. I like seeing pics of those in power with their guard down and relaxed. Reminds us that they are human.

Do you think that otherwise they would lack the touch of humanity?
NIxon was a relatively great president, the only president in recent memory that had ever seen a world map before his Inauguration.

I did not mean they lacked it but in this type of picture we get to see it. I shook hands with Nixon 3 times. At a convention luncheon on Miami Beach in 1965, at the rope line at Tampa airport in 1968 and again in the rope line at Miami airport in 1972.

yes, thanks for the homework, Carl, great pictures.
I am engaged to a retired Christmas tree farmer, I worked at his retail lot for many years, and I want to know who picked the Carter’s tree. It’s kind of tall and skinny and swervy, it looks like it might fall down.

A Christmas tree farmer! From a child’s view(mine too) they are the most magical and enchanted and wonderful trees that can be grown. I am sure he must know, but may have not told you, but they are protected by invisible tin soldiers and elves who are in love with ballerinas and angels.Ah, but I am sure that over the years he develpoed the ability too see them. He may not care to discuss this with you because the rule is that if he reveals his power to see all the fairies of the forest he will lose his power to see them. But I’ve known about this for six decades of my life. In 1985 I rode the Star Coast train from Seattle to San Diego and saw them in Oregon.

Shucks, Dave. Long before cameras were invented I did the old fashioned way with oils on canvass. Started in the 1770’s and did Lord North, George III, William Pitt, and Cornwallis and DeGrasse. After that little independence matter, I painted Washington, Adams and Jefferson. So you see I have quite a background in the visual arts as well as slinging horse shit.

Kate: I shook hands with Nixon in 1965, 9168, and 1972. With Jimmy Carter in 1976. In 1980 I sat 10 feet from Nancy and Ron at Lincoln Day Dinner for 2,000 people at the $50,000 table. I paid only $25 but had connections.
